What We’ve Been Up To: Looking ahead!

Welcome to 2026. We hope all our stakeholders enjoyed a restorative and inspiring break. The past year has been a fantastic and rewarding experience. Highlighting just one is tough, but two examples stand out for us.

Most notably, was the formal endorsement of FISHTWIN® by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO’S efforts under the UN Ocean Decade Science for Sustainable Development. Second, establishing a compelling strategy and progressing FISHTWIN’S ambition to develop high-impact innovative data products and methodologies that integrate climate adaptation and mitigation into a single strategic objective. Building on the strong momentum of the end of 2025, there’s already a real sense of ambition and confidence, as we find our rhythm for the months ahead.

So, with that, let’s jump into what we’ve been up to this January 2026. As a DITTO -affiliated project, we were delighted to participate and present at the Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) programme’s Use Case event on 13 & 14 January 2026. Today — Fisheries business face several interconnected challenges that create gaps in the implementation of climate efforts within their supply chains, even as momentum builds for setting climate adaptation and net zero targets.

‍Against this backdrop, there is a need for a more integrated, strategic approach and end-to- end transformation initiatives to boost resilience and enhance operational efficiency gains across fisheries value chains. Fishtwin aims to enhance fisheries climate resilience with a threefold approach: AI driven simulation, optimization, and real-time monitoring to better anticipate and react to operations disruption.

This event convened the global Digital Twins of the Ocean (DITTO) community for a series of sessions showcasing current initiatives, recent advances, and opportunities for cross-continental collaboration. It provided an open forum to exchange ideas, present novel developments, and discuss the state of the art in Digital Twin Ocean technologies, methodologies, and applications.

The program highlighted the work of the DITTO Working Groups alongside contributions from endorsed projects, partners, and community initiatives. Together, these contributions spanned a broad range of themes, including next-generation Digital Twin architectures, modelling and AI applications, data integration, as well as stakeholder engagement, ethics, and co-design approaches. Partners and contributors shared practical use cases demonstrating how Digital Twins are being developed and applied to support ocean knowledge, management, and sustainable development.

We are particularly encouraged by the opportunity to further strengthen FISHTWIN’s partnerships with like-minded organisations to advance cooperation in addressing the impacts of climate change on fisheries management and a sustainable ocean economy.

Beyond this, we have no doubt that together we are advancing sustainability at Sea to benefit people and the planet.
